No, I’m not Irish

Yeah, so, I get asked a lot if I’m Irish. I always say the same thing: “No, this red hair is paid for. I’m Chinese.” [My great grandmother was Chinese. True story.]

Of course, now I’m Irish by marriage. So yeah, happy St. Patrick’s Day. I hope you don’t hear House of Pain’s “Jump Around” too many times today.

I always think of my Chico State days on St. Patrick’s Day. Of course, it’s pretty much always St. Patrick’s Day at Chico State, drinking all day, etc., except on St. Patrick’s Day the beer is green. I remember walking through the campus one day, literally stepping over passed out people on the grass and dodging puddles of green vomit. Ah, the good ol’ days.

Oh, one more thing … with all the bad news in the world, I decided to get happy in this week’s Dork Side.

You’re welcome.

I'm a writer/podcaster/mother/goober in San Francisco who likes to drink beer, shop, laugh and make other people laugh, watch old movies, feed my unhealthy obsession with pop culture, kick breast cancer's ass, go on adventures with my mighty, mighty good man David and my awesome autistic son, Calvin, wear orange and root for the San Francisco Giants, participate in general jackass-ery, talk about TV, eavesdrop on strangers' conversations, make nerdy “Star Wars” and “Simpsons” references, and post personal things about myself on the web for all to read, which makes me some sort of literary exhibitionist.

  1. I have warned my son to be prepared to field this question frequently, as I have throughout my life, although I presently answer on his behalf. He’s only a wee bit Irish, 1/16th, but people seem a bit bummed out when you qualify things like that. They want me to be Irish, and probably wear a green suit and have a pot of gold stashed somewhere.

Leave a comment, you guys. It's fun!
