Yeah, so, people are always asking about Homer.
Them: “How is Homer with the baby?”
Me: “Great. Homer loves the baby.”
People seemed surprised by this answer, but he really does. Homer loves the Spawn. He loves to be close to him. He sits in the door way of Calvin’s room, facing out, like he’s guarding the room. If you are sitting on the couch with the boy, he gets as close as possible. If the baby starts crying, Homer runs to the Spawn’s room and pushes open the door and then runs back to you. He’s a little furry baby monitor.
I’m writing about this because I was in yoga the other day and overheard a conversation about babies and dogs. The instructor and the yoga studio owner were talking about their dogs and how much they love them.
“He’s my little baby. But I know people who treated their dogs like they were their babies and then they have a baby and they say, “Oh, well, he’s just a dog.’”
I rolled out my mat and decided I needed to chime in.
“Well, as someone who has a dog and recently had a baby, I will tell you that’s not true. At least not for me. I have had my dog for 10 years, and he is still very much my baby,” I said. “Homer still sleeps in the bed with us and the baby doesn’t.”
I have also gotten some crap at work about not changing my desktop photo. The desktop photo is of Homer. It has been for years. Also, the photo on my phone is Homer as well.
Co-worker: “Your desktop photo is still the dog? Why don’t you use a baby picture?”
Me: “Because I don’t love my baby.”
I might change the photo someday. But, honestly, I just didn’t think about it. I didn’t pop out this baby and think, “Man oh man, I can’t wait to get back to work and change my desktop photo.”
Homer is still very much a part of this family. There is always a lap for him.
