You guys, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Yeah, so, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Are you aware of breast cancer? If not, well, I’m jealous.

I’m not going to turn into blog into a Breast Cancer Awareness Center, but I do want to encourage all the ladies to feel their boobs and get mammograms.

I wrote about how easy it is to get a mammogram riiight here. Here’s a taste:

Yeah, so, since I was diagnosed with the dreaded knocker sickness almost a year ago I have listened to countless women offer up their excuses for why they haven’t gotten a mammogram.

  • “I’m busy.”
  • “That’s for old ladies.”
  • “I don’t have health coverage.”
  • “Mind your own business, Mansfield.”

But the most common excuse I hear is, “But it hurts.”

Ladies, I am telling you right now, mammograms do not hurt. You know what hurts? Breast cancer. True story. Get a mammogram.

Last year, just a few weeks after popping out a kid, I allowed myself to be filmed. The awesome George Kelly and my equally awesome brother-in-law Tony Hick did a little video about breast cancer. You can check that out riiiight here. The cool thing about that video? I can point to it and say I’ve lost 50 pounds since we filmed it. Fact. Thank you, Weight Watchers.

Back in2009, I did a self exam and found a lump. I wrote all about my diagnosis riiight here. And, if you want to read all the cancer stuff (and hey, who doesn’t like reading about cancer?) then you can click riiight here to start at the beginning of my cancer story, which has a happy ending because I’m lucky. Super, super lucky.

I'm a writer/mocker/goober/mother in San Francisco who likes to drink beer, shop, laugh and make other people laugh, podcast, watch old movies, feed my unhealthy obsession with pop culture, kick breast cancer's ass, wear orange and root for the San Francisco Giants, participate in general jackass-ery, talk about TV, eavesdrop on strangers' conversations, make nerdy “Star Wars” and “Simpsons” references, and post personal things about myself on the web for all to read, which makes me some sort of literary exhibitionist.

  1. Other excuses for not getting mammograms: they won’t let me go to the free clinic anymore because ONE TIME I orgasmed during an exam. So not even my fault.

No, but seriously: one of my closest friends is a survivor and was only 33 was she was diagnosed! And my mom was 38. Glad you’re doing your part to raise awareness. And super duper glad you’re still around so I can continue to talk shit to you on the ‘nets.

  2. Thanks, Marie! I’m glad I’m still around to listen to your shit.

Leave a comment, you guys. It's fun!
