Nerd, dork, geek or spaz?

Yeah, so, have you seen this PSA from “Portlandia?”

Funny, right? It’s about real nerds vs. fashionable nerds. But, as someone who has been proudly calling herself a nerd for years, I found this PSA a little disturbing since I wear black-rimmed glasses and cute dresses like the woman in the beginning.

For the record, I would like it noted that I actually wear these glasses to see, and I’ve had these same frames since 2001. I was uncool before it was cool to be uncool. And, I’m not convinced that wearing cute dresses doesn’t make me less of a nerd.

It’s true, I don’t participate in LARPing, and it’s been at least a year since I rolled some 20-sided dice. Maybe I qualify as more of a dork or a spaz these days? I’m definitely not smart enough to be considered a geek.

I don’t think I need to defend my nerd (dork? spaz? geek?) cred to anyone, but here you go:

This is a photo of my desk, a corner dubbed “Nerd Corner” by a coworker. It contains a picture of Yoda, an Underdog statue, a Death Star and a Xenomorph from “Aliens.” The latest addition to Nerd Corner is a wand. Yes, a magic wand. Mighty, mighty good man David brought me a replica of Hermione Granger’s wand when he visited Hogwarts at Universal Studios last week.

It is displaying proudly on my desk, and I plan to use on any coworkers who make unreasonable demands or the office busybody who pokes her head into my cube and peppers me with questions about my lunch.

See that corner? Look at it! Now imagine an entire house like that … Seriously.

So what am I? A dork? A nerd? A spaz? Help a sister out in the comments.

I'm a writer/podcaster/mother/goober in San Francisco who likes to drink beer, shop, laugh and make other people laugh, watch old movies, feed my unhealthy obsession with pop culture, kick breast cancer's ass, go on adventures with my mighty, mighty good man David and my awesome autistic son, Calvin, wear orange and root for the San Francisco Giants, participate in general jackass-ery, talk about TV, eavesdrop on strangers' conversations, make nerdy “Star Wars” and “Simpsons” references, and post personal things about myself on the web for all to read, which makes me some sort of literary exhibitionist.

  1. Wow. That’s kind of a hard one. I think I need more information before I make a judgement on how to categorize you. What do you usually do on the weekends? If activities include watching Battlestar Galactica non-ironically, then you probably are a nerd of the best variety.

  2. Don’t question the nerd cred. Embrace it. Relish it. And for godsake, put some sunblock on when you go outside.

    • I would say that I definitely embrace it. I just want to make sure I’m using the correct term. I don’t want to offend nerds if I’m a dork. I think I might be more of a dork.

And I ALWAYS wear sunscreen, even when I’m indoors.

  3. Yes, you are a nerd! Don’t let guys push you around claiming you are not ‘nerdy enough’ to count. You pwn that nerd, girlfriend!

Leave a comment, you guys. It's fun!
